Shar Pei Rescue Inc. are a not for profit association registered in Victoria (registration number A0053985U) and head quartered in Tyabb Victoria on the Mornington Peninsula.

Our mission is to help as many of this exquisite breed of dog as we can by rehabilitating sick, injured or badly behaved Shar Pei, educating the general public on responsible pet ownership and Shar Pei specific requirements, and re-homing to caring families looking for a loyal companion.

We are a purely volunteer-based organisation and rely on donations for fundi ng however the available funding is insufficient to meet the growing demand and sadly, all to often we have to leave Shar Pei at the pound to await their fate.  Unfortunately Shar Pei do not like being caged and consequently will often behave badly whilst behind bars.  The innevatable consequence is that they rarely make it out of the pound alive.

With over 250,000 dogs and cats euthanised annually we endevour to do what we can to minimise these numbers and work closely with many pounds, shelters and rescue groups around the country to assist wherever possible.

In the interests of re-homing as many dogs as we can, our rescues are available for much less than the cost of the vet work, and as we don't receive any government funding or assistance we rely on the genoristy of the general public to allow us continue saving these loveable dogs.

Why do we do it?

Australian's fell in love with "Rolly" in the Purex toilet paper commercial which encouranged back yard breeders around the country to cash in on the popularity.  Unfortunately many people purchase puppies for the wrong reasons, or don't bother training their dog, can't find a vet that knows how to fix the common Shar Pei health problems and inevitably surrender or dump their dog by the age of two. Most Shar Pei that end up at the pound or shelters are mistreated, in poor health or suffering severe psychological trauma and when you consider that over 250,000 dogs are killed in pounds and shelters every year in Australia it's not surprising to learn that Shar Pei rarely make it out alive as they aren't considered model prisoners in doggy prison.  Shar Pei tend to protest via hun ger strikes, depression or willful aggression.  Pounds and Shelters are typically ill-equipped to deal with these kinds of issues so once the 8 days expires the dog is put down.

We believe in giving these animals a second chance and find that a little specialist tender loving care and some quality time at obedience school results in a new lease on life for these dogs.

After adopting our first Shar Pei (Noah) from Shar Pei Rescue (NSW) we became actively involved and eventually incorporated Shar Pei Rescue in Victoria.

We have sucessfully rehomed over 300 dogs in the past few years and believe that without the efforts of Shar Pei Rescue Inc these dogs would have had short, miserable lives.

The Shar Pei have one of the richest histories of any dog breed and make a great family dog for experienced dog owners.  With our help these great dogs get a second chance.  Put simply, we help when no-one else will.
