This sweet boy, who is great with other dogs, kids, in fact seemingly everyone was a stray into the pound. We don’t know his history except to say this hungry baby has experienced a lot of trouble with his eyes in the past. All fixed now, Jordan’s eyes will be of no issue again.

Entropion surgery/desex/microchip and C5 vaccination performed 12/8/10. Jordan is a honey, although obviously he had been starved for food. Not to worry – this beautiful boy has had a few weeks with us and you won’t recognise him now as the same skinny boy who came to us last month. Jordan is only about 9-10 months old and just loves human attention.

Jordan would love a home with a doggy girlfriend, an indoor bed, plenty of good quality food an indoor bed and some doggy school as he is very bright and is responding really well to the basic training he has received from us. As with 99.9% of Shar Pei over 12 weeks of age, Jordan is fully house trained.

Available for less than the cost of his vet work at just $500 Jordan is now ready to leave SPR Inc for his new life. For further information, please contact amanda.booth@sharpeirescue.com.au

Poor Lockie needs a break! He came to SPR over Christmas 2009 with shocking ulcers on his eyes and an old injury.

Lockie had huge eye surgery to correct the ulcers and to remove the excess skin rubbing on his eye balls. He also had a course of injections and rehab on his hind leg which the vets thinks is just the result of some uneven bone growth and will be fine when he has finished growing in about 6 mths.

Given his exquisite nature, it was no surprise he was adopted by a family with 2 x young kids (under 8 yrs).

Lockie waved farewell to us and left for his new life, with a detailed plan of what this special boy would require in his future. Being gentle exercise, some basic schooling (because no body wants a naughty teenager)! And his very own crate.

8 mths pass and last week we receive a phone call from a caring vet on the out skirts of Melbourne.

Seems there had been a dog attack the night before and a Shar Pei with a wonderful nature had been attacked, cut up pretty badly in fact.

Unbeknown at the time to either the vet or SPR Inc, this poor dog was none other than our Lockie needing our assistance once again because, wait for this, his new family would not pay for his stitch up surgery and told the vet to put Lockie to sleep!

Lockie is now safely back home in Peiville again, all stitched up and recovering well. He is STILL just divine, be it all grown up now.

School obviously didn’t happen, so Lockie will receive his basic training before leaving SPR Inc.

Our sweet man would make a wonderful addition to any family. He is dog friendly and kid friendly. House trained and by the time he leaves SPR Inc, he will be lead trained and will sit on command.

Lockie is available for less than the cost of his vetwork at just $500

For more details on this special boy, please contact amanda.booth@sharpeirescue.com.au

Dana and her buddy Ben were transferred from Pets Haven to SHAR PEI Rescue Inc in early July for specialist care – thank you Pets Haven.

Dana has now recovered from entropion surgery, desex, C5 vaccination and microchip. The red swelling in Dana’s eye will fade over the next few weeks as the trauma of surgery subsides.

She is a very gentle little girl, but will need a good strong dominant owner who will train the puppy out of this young lady.

Doggy school is a must and Dana would make a wonderful companion for younger children as she is such a little submissive sweetie.

An indoor bed and good quality food are the order of the day, and doggy boyfriend will just set this girl up for life.

At approx 12 months of age, and available for less than the cost of her vetwork at just $600, Dana is looking forward to starting life again in her new loving home.

Beautiful Ben the chocolate brush coat with BIG ears has been transferred from Pets Haven to SHAR PEI Rescue Inc Victoria on 27/7/10.

28/7/10 – Ben has had major surgery to try to save one eye. His eye ball has actually been held in place by two buttons!!! So far so good, but the next few weeks will be touch and go.

7/8/10 – Looking good for young Benjamin Buttons eye! Buttons and stitches due for removal about 11/8/10.

14/7/10 Our wonderful vet Scot, has managed to give Ben two beautiful fully functioning eyes!! You would never know there was any question about saving them!! As the next few weeks pass, Bens eyes will heal some more and within the next month the inflammation and left over swelling will subside around Bens eyes, leaving him to be what he is best….and thats a very sexy beast!

Once again, MANY THANKS to Dr Scot Plummer at SOUTH EASTERN ANIMAL HOSPITAL Clayton for performing yet another miracle!!

Ben has also endured entropion surgery and is now desexed, microchipped and C5 vaccinated.

Ben is proving to be a happy healthy boy with a good appetite and lots of smoochy cuddles and wiggle butt wags.

He would do well in a home with a female doggy companion, a bed in doors, and plenty of good quality vet kibble, chicken necks/frames and minced chicken carcass.

Older kids (over 8 yrs) would be fine but cats and small animals (rabbits/ chooks etc) would not be a good mix with this boy.

At approx 12 months of age, young Benjamin Button has had it tough in his first year of life and needs a loving home where he can blossom while learning how to become a well behaved and obedient fur kid. Some regular school would help sort out this boy from a nawty teen to a well trained pooch as would an environment where he felt he was a part of the family with daily walks and the occasional car ride.

Ben is way below the cost of his vet work at just $600 and is waiting to meet you at your earliest convenience!

Born on 29/11/09, Shanaye came to us only days before she’d have lost her battle with life. She was underfed, scared and with little trust of anyone or anything in life.

A very kind volunteer travelled the 4 hour round trip to pick up Shanaye (and her sister Skyla) and get them into safe keeping. It was touch and go for a few days with Shanaye, every time she would stand she would simply topple over sideways, she was so weak and had shocking bow legs from lack of nourishment.

That was then, and this is now!

A happy sweet baby girl who is bordering on tubby! Her legs have straightened out beautifully and that little wiggle bum just wags non stop.

Shanaye has managed to transform into a lovely house dog! She comes when you call her (especially if there is a chicken neck involved lol) Shanaye is trying her very best to get on with life and would do anything to please as she LOVES praise encouragement and reward.

As with 99.9% of Shar Pei, Shanaye is totally house trained and getting the hang of that walking on the lead thing, but would very much benefit from dog school.

At just 9kg, Shanaye is never going to be a big girl, she is only the size of a whippet, and she won’t get any taller, she may put on another kg, but that will be it as well. In all she is about half the size of an average female Shar Pei – the size we would expect to see in your average 16 week old pei.

Shanaye is learning to play and is great with other dogs. The one thing we would insist upon is a calm, loving environment for this little angel as given her past life experience, and how far she has come, we would never want to see her loose the confidence she has gained again.

This sweet little poppet has PERFECT almond shaped eyes and has recently been desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and wormed for both intestinal and heart worms.

A stable diet of minced chicken carcass, brown rice, grated sweet potato, chicken necks and quality kibble is the order of the day for Shanaye as is a warm and comfy bed indoors.

If you are interested in more information on Miss Muppet, please emailamanda.booth@sharpeirescue.com.au for an application form.

Available for less than the cost of her vetwork and rehab, Shanaye is just $600

We have begun agility training in Pakenham on Sunday mornings. It has an annual fee and not only does she get to socialise, we get to work on her obedience and have a lot of fun with the agility (she has quite a good jump!). They have been fantastic with Dakota, especially since her initial reaction to other dogs is to growl and be protective, mostly when she is on a leash. By the end of the sessions she is generally relaxed and pooped for the next few days! We would highly recommend them for anyone else who adopts a shar pei out this way. http://www.messypawz.com/AgilityDogTraining.html

A few months ago Dakota also participated in the million paws walk for the RSPCA, we were amazed at how comfortable she was with all the other dogs.

She has also become more friendly with strangers. She would often bark and hide under the table when we had visitors, she is slowly becoming more confident. As a general rule, we have found her more cautious with males, she tends to bark at them more often.

Dakota has had the opportunity to meet (off the leash) 2 x boxers of close friends, a pug x and a bull mastiff of our brothers, a jack russell x and cattle dog at our parent’s farm. She loves going out to the farm, because it’s the only place she can go off the leash other than the backyard. She loves running out in front of the miniature ponies and trying to get them to chase her. She runs all day and with a bit of encouragement she learned how to jump over the creek. It is her new favourite trick! She also had no hesitation in running through drains of cow manure. What did surprise us was that she went to get a drink out of the creek. She could only reach the edge which was muddy, so she stood in the muddy water to reach the clearer water in the middle of the creek. We still think she’s a water pei yet.

She has shown a bit of separation anxiety and was trying to dig out, we had to put mesh and weed mats under our side gate. Since then we have been ignoring her for 10-20 minutes when we get home, just to reinforce that she IS NOT top dog! That has seemed to ease it. She also has one toy (a soft teddy) that is always with her.

Hopefully we can get some photos of her at agility training to you shortly.

We hope all is going well at your end!
From Shaun, Karen and Dakota

In these tough financial times, we hate to ask, but we currently have many urgent needs dogs in care and would be most appreciative of any financial assistance you could extend to us to help our orphan dogs.

Just a few of the needy include:

Montana whose airfare is $410, her surgeries 7 vaccinations will be between $300 & $1200 depending whether she needs entropion surgery (we find 3 out of 5 that make our way to us do so). Montana will also need either a $1000 or a $1500 training program to get her up to speed to be adopted.

Montana is currently in Griffith Pound awaiting our help or it’s the green dream this coming Monday 28/6/10

Lulu is currently at the vet and has had her entropion surgery/desex/vaccinate. Lulu will do a $1000 training program before she can be adopted. Lulu was surrendered to us last weekend.

Arizona has left us for bootcamp. Arizona was a pound puppy whom we rescued and had entropion surgery performed on. Her costs so far have well and truly exceeded the $1000 mark. We expect her to complete the 3 week $1000 training program.

Wrinkles has completed a $1500 boot camp program and also endured entropion surgery (and desex/vaccinate/microchip). In all he is another orphan who has totalled over $2000 in costs so far.

Mattrix is another whose treatment/training costs are similar to Wrinkles.

And the list goes on and on…

Ellie is currently at boot camp and will need treatment on her hind leg before leaving us, Su Lin will need entropion surgery within the next fortnight etc, etc, etc

If you are in a position to help these fur babies, you can donate directly into our bank account – details below. Any and all donations are very gratefully received. We don’t ever want to be in a position where we run out of funds to help these beautiful dogs

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our current sponsors who very generously donate what they can to us each month.

Chris, Paul and the tribe from Narre Warren Victoria
Kaznpei from the Hunter Valley in NSW

And again, our heart felt thanks to those who have very generously donated to us in the past:

Cheryl, Coco & Dexter from Hampton Victoria
Di from South Western Plains NSW
Duncan from ACT
Kevin & Jutta, Sacchi & Tonka from Melbourne Victoria

If you are interested in providing Shar Pei Rescue with financial assistance, please contact us. We would dearly love to hear from you.

Hi there!

My name is Charlotte and I am looking for a new family! My last family didn’t really want my sister and I. They kept us in a garage and only fed us when they remembered.

My sister Karley and I only had one another to rely on really until Shar Pei Rescue Inc came to our aid. We have now been vaccinated, wormed, micro chipped, desexed and we have both had entropion surgeries, (please excuse the stitches in my eyes, they are going to be removed in three days YAY)! although, one of my eyes couldn’t be saved. But that’s OK, I can see everything for miles and miles with my one eye!! AND PLEASE…..DON”T CALL ME CYCLOPS!!!! lol I am just a little slip of a girl with a lovely chocolate brown horse coat/furcoat. I love being near you although since I have discovered life beyond the garage, I am rather partial to getting out and having a sniff around as well. I will wiggle my whole body for human company and I am even getting better with meeting other dogs, although they can be a bit scary for a little poppet.

I hope my new home will let me sleep inside and feed me good quality vet kibble and minced chicken carcass for my meals – although I really don’t eat too much, I am still getting used to having regular meals (which are fantastic aren’t they)??

I think I would like to go to big girls school, just to see all those other dogs and learn a thing or two, however, I am pretty smart so I will get the hang of what you would like me to do very quickly, it is the sociability I would really enjoy at dog school. Would you have the time to go there with me?

If you think that we might become besties, can you go to the forms page and fill in an application form with as much detail as possible please? (Preferred method of contact) If you don’t have access to the web, just give Amanda a call on 0432 710 765, do keep trying if you don’t get through at first as there are so many of us in care at the moment, sometimes phones calls take a back seat!!

Amanda says I can go home with you for much less than the cost of the vetwork I have had at just $550.00 and I promise. I will love you for life! Oh, and I come complete with my bed, martingale collar, lead and hot pink doggy jumper. I am ready to go!

Cheers, Charlotte
